The Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) is an initiative designed to improve student learning at the University. The Plan was developed as a part of the reaccreditation of UT Permian Basin by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges in 2010. At UT Permian Basin, a broad cross-section of students, faculty, staff, and alumni identified topics for the QEP and selected teaching critical thinking as the topic likely to have the most impact on student learning. The pilot project demonstrated that critical thinking can be effectively taught in the classroom.
The general education curriculum now includes critical thinking as one of six major outcomes and one of only two outcomes that must be taught and evaluated in every core course in the curriculum. The rubrics and lessons learned during the QEP have been incorporated into the core curriculum and a number of faculty who took advantage of QEP faculty development workshops have also incorporated them into other courses throughout the University’s curriculum.
