What happens when Freddy the Falcon swoops into cheer camp? He takes home an award for superior mascot, of course! It is no surprise to us that Freddy won. We can all agree that we love that bird, but who’s beneath the beak? The answer to that question is none other than Brittaney Ahrdent. Brittaney is a sophomore here at UTPB, and she is the woman who brings our beloved Freddy to life.
Brittaney tried out to be Freddy at the end of her freshman year, and she has been flapping with school spirit ever since! This is not Brittaney’s first time in a mascot suit. She realized her love of being a mascot when she was in tenth grade. Prior to that she was a cheerleader. She decided to hang up her pom-poms and put on a mascot head. Even with that background she knew that college would be different. That didn’t stop her though.
When she puts that falcon head on she is no longer Brittaney. In that moment, she becomes Freddy the Falcon. While the job is incredibly fun, being a mascot is not all fun and games. There is a lot of both physical and mental work put into being a mascot. Not only does she have to stay in great physical shape she also must get into a mindset where she can be Freddy. There is no breaking character when she is in the suit. At any given moment there are children, parents, fans, coaches, and athletes running up to Freddy. To properly represent UTPB, and Freddy, she has to give one hundred percent all the time.
She definitely did that at cheer camp. It was a week of sweat and school spirit. Thirty-three mascots came to cheer camp, but only five went home with trophies. The mascots were judged on school spirit and their ability to maintain their characters. Brittaney was able to maintain her character while battling against the humid, sweaty inside of the Freddy costume.
However, none of the difficult aspects of being a mascot bother Brittaney. Her love of being a mascot shines through. The amount of joy that Freddy brings all of us is the same amount of joy, if not more, that Freddy brings Brittaney. When she talks about Freddy she talks about him as though he is a real person. It is honestly inspiring the amount of dedication she has to being Freddy. Going pro is not out of the realm of possibility for Brittaney. She would welcome the opportunity. Congratulations Brittaney! You’ve made all of us at UTPB very proud. GO FALCONS!
